Anaxi is a travelling monk who visits the small villages and out of the way places on the outskirts of the Ionian Empire. Life on the road has made him tough and self sufficient; he thinks nothing of weathering a storm under a bush or catching frogs to make his dinner.
Everywhere he goes he is welcomed by the peasants and small folk, but he is beneath the notice of the wealthy and noble.
He has a vast knowledge of history and the arcane, but is also quite fond of telling fairytales to children or swapping tall stories over a tankard of ale at a local inn.
He has in his possession several crystal artefacts that the temples are perhaps unaware of.

The high temple has asked Anaxi to accompany two initiate sculptors to county Kambos in the kingdom of Chios to oversee the harvesting of a crystal core for a new airship being constructed for the imperial fleet.

Danaid is the second eldest of five sisters, whom she has supported since their father died. She is a member of the climbers guild and makes her living by stealing lizard eggs (a delicacy)from the nests the creatures build on the local cliff faces.
The guild has 4 grades and the level of a climber’s grade dictates the quota of lizard eggs they are allowed to harvest in a season.
Danaid is grade 2, but her quota is barely enough to take care for her family’s needs. Last year she tested to become grade 3, but was bitten by a rouge lizard that got on to the course, causing her to fall. This year she is determined not to let her misfortune hold her back, and is skipping grade 3 to take the grade 4 test. She is training exceptionally hard, pushing herself to her limits but has yet to successfully complete a practice run of the course.

She is starting to doubt herself and wondering if she should perhaps just test for grade 3 when she meets Anaxi, who reads her fortune and suggest she accompany him on his expedition to harvest the crystal core.

At the height of the Mage Wars a terrible atrocity took place; in order to destroy his rival, a dark sorcerer dispelled the Godspell which held aloft the continent of Ganymede, casting it into the pit and causing the deaths of thousands of people.
The Temples, who had done their best to protect the common people and stay true to the tenants of their slain god, decided that they must take extreme action in order to prevent any such thing from ever happening again. They cast the Lastspell, which crystallized all of the magic in the world, freezing existing spells and forever sealing away the source of the mages' power.
They did not come to this decision lightly, for it would demand much sacrifice; the Godspells would be crystallized too, and the only way to keep the continents in the air would be to imbed singers at their cores. The eternal song of these brave individuals would resonate with the crystallized Godspells and keeping their magic active.

Keroessa volunteered to sing for Io. She remains to this day at the continents heart, forever un-ageing, encased in crystal. Her sacrifice saved the lives of thousands and The Temples elevated her to sainthood in recognition of her selflessness and compassion. Few ever set eyes upon her, save the climbers and monks who, several centuries later, travel to the crystal cave to harvest chunks of the Godspell for use as airship cores.
